Washington, D.C. – TechNet, the national, bipartisan network of innovation economy CEOs and senior executives, sent a letter to the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet in advance of its hearing examining the current legal landscape of device repair and related intellectual property issues. The following statement can be attributed to TechNet President and CEO Linda Moore:
“Consumers, businesses of all sizes, schools, and hospitals need to know that when their device is repaired, it’s done safely, securely, and correctly by a professional with the proper tools, training, and certifications.
“A national, one-size-fits-all repair rule would provide bad actors and unvetted third parties with sensitive diagnostic information and unrestricted access to propriety information and trade secrets to thousands of devices from phones and computers to home security systems and hospital equipment.
“Instead, the market should continue to respond. The number of authorized repair providers continues to grow, giving consumers more options to get their devices repaired safely and correctly. We will work with members of Congress to educate them on the safety concerns of passing national repair legislation that would undermine consumer product safety, reliability, and security.”
